Carl Zeiss Research Award: Excellence in optical research

The Carl Zeiss Research Award has been presented every two years since 1990 in honor of outstanding achievements in international optical research. It is one of the most prestigious prizes in the field of optics.

The 2011 Research Award has been won by Professor James G. Fujimoto from the MIT in Cambridge (USA). He has been honored for the development of optical coherence tomography (OCT).

He joins a long list of renowned award-winners including subsequent Nobel laureates Eric A. Cornell and Ahmed Zewail.
